Unfair reviews and false allegations

Unfair and Misleading Google Review Assistance

Most business owners who contact us describe the review as "unfair". Sometimes that is because it is fake. More often a real customer has exaggerated, left out context or made allegations that aren't true. Unfair reviews are among the hardest to remove, because Google gives genuine customers a lot of room to share opinions. They are not always untouchable, though. Evelon Digital helps you work out which parts of an unfair review, if any, cross into a policy breach.

What makes a review unfair rather than fake

An unfair review usually comes from a real customer or contact. The problem is in what they say, not whether they were there. They may accuse staff of theft, discrimination or unsafe practice without basis. They may describe a refund dispute without mentioning the refund you gave. Or they may give one star for something minor that was resolved at the time.

Google generally won't remove a genuine review because the business disputes the customer's opinion. Some unfair reviews do contain material Google's policies address: harassment of named staff, hate speech, private information, threats, or content about something other than the customer experience.

Common unfair review situations

  • Allegations of criminal conduct, fraud or scams that records contradict.
  • Reviews naming a junior staff member and attacking them personally.
  • Reviews leaving out that a full refund or remedy was provided.
  • Reviews posted during a dispute to pressure the business into a concession.
  • Ratings based on policies the customer agreed to, such as cancellation fees or deposits.

Possible policy concerns

Depending on the content, an unfair review may involve harassment, hate speech, personal information, off-topic content or conflict of interest. Some reviews that contain false allegations may also raise legal issues. Those are separate from Google's policies, and we don't advise on them. If only part of a review is a problem, the report has to focus on that part.

Evidence that may be useful

  • The full transaction history, including refunds, credits or remedies provided.
  • Correspondence with the customer before and after the review.
  • Signed terms, booking conditions or quotes the customer accepted.
  • Records disproving a specific factual allegation, such as dates, rosters or test results.
  • Evidence the review was used as leverage, such as a message demanding a refund in exchange for removal.

How Evelon Digital approaches unfair reviews

We separate the opinion from any reportable content. Where a policy concern exists, we prepare a focused report. Where it doesn't, we explain why and help you write a factual, professional public reply that addresses the allegation without escalating it. For many unfair reviews, a well-written reply does more for future customers than a report that is unlikely to succeed.

New and older unfair reviews

If the review is recent, keep every record of the interaction now. Older unfair reviews can still be assessed, and context such as a later resolution can still be relevant. A review that has sat unanswered for years often benefits from a measured reply, even if removal isn't possible.

Multiple unfair reviews

When several unfair reviews follow the same incident, they may be coordinated. That can bring in Google's fake engagement or spam policies as well. Tell us how many reviews there are and their ages, and we will assess them together.

Other negative Google reviews we handle

Each review is assessed on its own content and evidence. A possible policy breach does not guarantee removal — Google makes the final decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google remove a review just because it is unfair?
Generally not. Google removes reviews that breach its policies, not reviews a business disagrees with. Some unfair reviews contain content that does breach a policy.
The review accuses us of a crime. What should we do?
Keep records, avoid arguing publicly, and get legal advice on the allegation itself. We can assess whether the content also breaches Google's policies.
Should we reply to an unfair review?
Usually yes: briefly and factually, without private information. Readers judge the reply as much as the review.
Do you guarantee removal of unfair reviews?
No. Google makes the final decision, and many genuine unfair reviews remain.
How do I get pricing?
Submit the free assessment form. Pricing is emailed privately and there is no upfront removal payment.
