Copyright strikes versus Content ID claims
These are routinely confused and are not the same thing. A Content ID claim affects monetisation and can be disputed inside YouTube's system with no strike risk. What's the difference between a copyright strike and a Content ID claim?
A Content ID claim usually redirects monetisation to the claimant and carries no penalty against the channel. A copyright strike is a formal legal takedown that counts toward termination. They are resolved through completely different processes.
Should I file a counter-notification?
Only when you have a genuine legal basis, such as ownership, licence or fair dealing. A counter-notification provides your details to the claimant and can invite legal action, so it should be a considered decision rather than a reflex.
My channel was hacked and terminated. Is it recoverable?
Often. Evidence of the compromise — login alerts, changed recovery details, the timing of unfamiliar uploads — supports an argument that the violations weren't yours, and Google has a dedicated recovery path for hijacked channels.
Do copyright strikes expire?
Copyright strikes generally expire after 90 days provided you complete the required copyright training and receive no further strikes. Waiting out an expiry is sometimes safer than disputing.
